Combined ADHD In The Workplace

Over the last few months, I have seen many posts on the internet dedicated to providing advice for ADHDers at work. Although I have always been a tenacious human, the monotony of an office environment soon rendered me jobless and the entrepreneurial fire, which had been burning inside me since I was a very young child, only received it’s fuel when I set up Bedford Tutor in 2012. Although running a business is challenging, my unique brain thrives on the creativity and spontaneity of entrepreneurship. I am lucky enough to have the most amazing customers and, as somebody who is proud of their brain, I am comfortable discussing how my clients can help me with the unique challenges I face on a daily basis.

Combined ADHD is both a superpower and kryptonite when it comes to running my own business. I know Bedford Tutor wouldn’t be here without my ADHD, but I also acknowledge the challenges my neurodiverse brain brings. Fortunately, I am confident explaining these difficulties to customers and believe much of my success is down to being honest about the way my galaxy brain functions.

Here are five things things Combined ADHDer entrepreneurs really need from their customers – they honestly do help us massively!

ACCEPT THE FACT WE NEED REGULAR BREAKS

Our brains are really focused on the jobs we love, but we only function optimally when we can take regular breaks! Daily allowances for exercise, creativity and socialising with friends help us keep focused when we are working!

SPEAK TO US IN PERSON IF THERE’S A PROBLEM

We can struggle to interpret meaning in texts and e-mails and often jump to the worst-case scenario even if the issue is minor; many of us find it much easier to deal with problems if we can discuss them verbally!

GIVE US CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS AND DEADLINES

Having Combined ADHD can make it challenging to stick to the task in hand and we are prone to procrastination. Having clear instructions (which are broken down in a way we can understand) helps us manage larger projects and deadlines ensure we know what we are working towards!

GIVE US NOTICE OF CHANGES

Many of us keep our ADHD under control in business by ensuring we follow organisational systems which aid our ability to cope with appointments and timings. Therefore, it really helps if you give us as much notice as you can of any changes you need to make to meetings, etc.

UNDERSTAND WE ARE NATURALLY EXCITABLE AND FIDGETY

Having Combined ADHD means we are more energetic than many other people. We do fidget at work and this helps keep our brains focused on the task in hand. Fidgeting is a must for many of us with Combined ADHD.

Thanks for being amazing – have an awesome day!

Hello, I’m Annabel and my mind is like a galaxy. Diagnosed with ADHD during lockdown, since then I have made it my mission to inspire other ADHDers to see the positives of living with a ‘galaxy brain’ and educate people about what it is like living with ADHD. I run my own tutoring and coaching business, helping many children with ADHD and dyslexia, and have always been an avid amateur writer and artist. Recently, I have written a children’s book which highlights the positives of ADHD: ‘Hadie & Adah’ and I will continue to promote my drawings and blog posts – focusing on positivity and creativity – in future. I truly am proud of my galaxy mind!
